Trash on the beach is more than an unsightly inconvenience for beach‐bound vacationers, tourist, or pleasure boaters; it’s one of the world’s most pervasive marine pollution problems. By the simple process of moving from ship to sea, sewer to surf, or hand to sand, any manufactured material becomes marine debris. Trash in our water and on our shorelines can be damaging to both wildlife and humans alike. Many animals mistake it as food. If animals don’t eat it, they could become entangled in it, which can have fatal results. And items like sharp glass or hot coals can injure barefoot humans. Fishing lines and nets can easily tangle boat propellers, leading to costly repairs. And each year cities pay thousands of dollars in an effort to keep trash from reaching California’s shores.

Founded as the San Diego War Against Litter Committee (WALC) in 1954, I Love A Clean San Diego (ILACSD) has worked to improve the health and beauty of San Diego for over 60 years. In the 1970s “I Love A Clean San Diego” was the slogan for the organization’s anti-litter campaign and in 1980 it became the organization’s name. In 1989, ILACSD merged with the San Diego Ecology Center, joining two leading environmental organizations together to better serve the community, under one name. ILACSD continues to be San Diego’s leading environmental organization in San Diego County connecting over 60,000 youth and adults with the local environment each year. Annually, ILACSD volunteers remove half a million pounds of debris from San Diego's neighborhoods, creeks, canyons, and coastline.

The California Coastal Commission, local organizations, agencies, and California State Parks coordinate the Adopt‐A‐Beach Program to provide coastal‐conscience Californians with the opportunities to keep their beaches clean all year round.
